Skin of babies are thin, less cornified, less hairy and contains relatively high proportion of Water in comparison to the adult skin.

Skin problems

  • Heat rash: Small, red to clear, pin pointed bumps usually over covered sites such as the back and the buttocks. Causes due to excessive perspiration, dressing a baby too warmly and Dressing baby in fabrics that don’t allow sweat to evaporate normally.
  • Nappy rash: Red, scaly rash over the areas of the skin that are covered by diapers. Causes due to prolonged contact with urine and stools, excessive moisture from prolonged use of diapers, friction from fabric or adhesive tapes.
  • Cradle cap: Scaly, pink to red patches on the scalp also areas like neck , armpits and groin. Caused by yeast/bacterial infection. An abnormal production of oil in the oil glands and hair follicles.
  • Atopic eczema: Patches of red, itchy, rough and dry skin typically on a baby’s cheeks and at the joints of the arms and legs. Environmental factors like, allergens causes eczema [WebMD].
